This Week In Doctor Who Western Hemisphere

The Guide to North and South American Doctor Who TV Listings

Ztele in Canada is launching Series 4 of Doctor Who this Tuesday at 9PM Eastern. And they start with Voyage of the Damned, the 2007 Christmas special that has not previously aired in Canada in any form. This is not the first time a Doctor Who episode has had its Canadian premiere in French. In 2006, Ztele began airing Series 2 in August while CBC got to it in October, so the 13 episodes from New Earth to Doomsday were seen in French first. Indeed, SciFi Channel in the US didn't start those episodes till September 2006, so those French episodes were the North American premieres, not just Canada. This time around - it's the Canadian premiere.

Those watching Series 4 repeats on SciFi Channel early Friday mornings are going
to have some disappointment. This Friday - Turn Left has been pulled at the last
minute to accomodate a marathon of the NBC show Kings. The Stolen Earth airs as
normal on April 17th, and then it jumps back to Partners In Crime on the 24th,
as SciFi is unwilling to run the extended length episodes in that time slot.
Daytime Rotation marathons (the sets of episodes from 8AM to 4PM) continue as
normal.

WTTW Chicago, IL - Series 2 repeats return on Easter Sunday 12 April at 11PM with The Christmas Invasion. Series 3 is expected to begin after this run of Series 2 is finished.

WGVU/WGVK Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo, MI has Last of the Time Lords scheduled to air in May with a run time of 46 minutes, 44 seconds. If this is true, then the PBS stations are being sold the cut down version of Last of the Time Lords instead of the full 51 minute version. The times given to PBS are not always accurate - this episode was certainly shorter than 46 minutes, 44 seconds on SciFi, BBC America, and the CBC. Until somebody with the tape can confirm the situation or the episode airs on a PBS station, we can't be entirely certain what will air. But do not get all worked up about finally seeing Last of the Time Lords uncut on a TV station - you could be disappointed.

USA - Doctor Who - Series 3 (The Runaway Bride and the 13 episode 2007 series
with Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones) are now distributed to Public TV stations
by BBC Worldwide Americas, not American Public TV. Series 4 also seems to be
available to buy - start date for Series 4 on Public TV stations is unknown. BBC
Worldwide Americas also distributes classic Doctor Who to stations.

Now, I am confident that there are more stations with rights to Series 3 than
that. But these are the stations who have contacted me. Somehow I doubt that BBC
Worldwide Americas is going to send out a note with the stations who bought in
like American Public TV did, leaving us in the dark till a station comes forward
or it appears in their schedules.

Series 2 is currently available to public TV stations in an American Public TV
package until March 31, 2010. For the Series 1 and 2 packages, stations have
bought the rights to cycle through the episodes 4 times. They are not required
to do so. American Public TV is no longer offering Series 1 - I do not know if
BBC Worldwide Americas will offer those stations to public TV stations now or
not.

2 Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor Who run
(1963-1989). KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA and WHRO 15 Norfolk, VA are airing Tom Baker
episodes. Neither station has New Who Series rights.

In the USA, all the full power TV stations are currently due to turn off their
analog transmitters at 11:59PM on June 12, 2009 and go strictly to digital
broadcasting. This is the most recent final immovable date to be passed by
Congress and signed by the President. Roughly one third (about 600) of the
stations have previously turned off their analog signals and more will shut down
before June 12. Cable customers are not noticing the change. Satellite customers
who get their local channels on the satellite service are not noticing the
change. If your TV gets local stations over the air and *does* have a digital
tuner built in or as a set top box, you are fine but will want to keep doing new
scans whenever stations in your area turn off analog, as the level of
overlapping station interference will decrease and many stations will be moving
to new broadcast frequencies to be received better. If a TV does not have a
digital tuner or a box, it will only be able to get some low power stations that
have chosen to stay analog once this transition is complete, and depending on
where you live you may have already noticed stations going away.

BBC America is saying in e-mail responses to fan queries that the full length
version of Journey's End will air in June (date TBA). The February version was a
45 to 46 minute cutdown version of the original 63 minute episode.

Public TV Premiere Run:
I have tried to get the correct digital switch day for each of these stations.
The dates have shifted for some stations, and I have not been able to recheck
them all. If you are watching these stations over the air instead of via cable
or satellite provided locals, your best bet is to make sure you have a digital
tuner NOW (built into your TV, VCR, DVR, DVDR, etc or as a set-top box).
